Enabling the Immediate Marketability of Sustainable Technologies

April 01, 2008 By: Don Eaves Category: Sustainable Policy

Total North American venture capital invested in green tech companies reached $2.9 billion in 2006, an increase of 78 percent over the $1.6 billion invested in 2005.

Loudoun County faces serious budgetary issues while at the same time we must support the needs of a population that has grown rapidly over cell free phone ringtones verizon wireless composer free nokia ringtones free christian ringtones free ringtones converter free ringtones for sprint phone free music real ringtones sprint free get ringtones motorola v3 ringtones free logo nokia ringtones 2366i nokia ringtones free ringtones for cricket phone free lg ringtones cell free phone ringtones verizon 50 cent ringtones kyocera ringtones free bollywood ringtones blackberry ringtones download free mobile real ringtones t free motorola ringtones tracfone make ringtones the past few years. A fundamental solution to this problem is to strategically attract new businesses into our community that will provide the tax revenue necessary to support our community, while at the same time improving our living conditions and environment.

Let’s start off by describing why “Green” Tech and businesses make an excellent strategic target.

Why We Should Enable the Immediate Marketability of Sustainable Technologies

  • It is broadly acknowledged within the global community that our continued dependence on fossil fuels is unsustainable:
    1. There is a security threat with allowing other nations or interests, which may not align with internal U.S. interests, to provide vital energy needs, and to control energy markets.
    2. The increasing costs associated with our dependence on depleting fossil resources threatens our economy.
    3. The immediate threat of Global Warming will have vast economic and security implications if left unabated. In fact, the Pentagon’s planning scenario says that global warming “should be elevated beyond a scientific debate to a US national security concern.” It declares that “future wars will be fought over the issue of survival rather than religion, ideology or national honor.”
  • Forward looking governments are introducing policies to secure leadership roles in Green Technologies:
    1. In 2000 and 2001 public policy leadership by Japan and Germany created an investible regulatory framework for solar electricity technology, enabling a multi-billion dollar global market.

How Rush Limbaugh Used Bill Clinton to Sabotage Obama in Texas

March 24, 2008 By: Don Eaves Category: Elections

Limbaugh’s “Keep Hillary Alive” campaign, which included an interview with Bill Clinton on the day of the Primary, has been credited with bringing about 119,000 GOP loyalists out to torpedo Obama in Texas.

Bill Clinton performed an interview with arch-conservative Rush Limbaugh’s substitute guest host Mark Davis, which was aired on the  Rush Limbaugh show the day of the Texas Primary. This was part of Limbaugh’s “Keep Hillary Alive” campaign, which has been credited with bringing about 119,000 GOP loyalists out to torpedo Obama in Texas. This number would have been enough to sway the primary to Clinton’s favor, since Hillary won Texas 50.9%-47.4%, which is only about 100,000 more votes than Obama.

The avowed purpose of Limbaugh and those talkers who joined him in this effort to get GOP crossovers was to a) throw a monkey wrench into Obama’s string of victories and break his momentum b) help force the Democratic battle for the nomination to go on longer and become more bitter in order to weaken the Democrats and help Republican chances c) get Senator Clinton as candidate because some Republicans perceived her as the weaker candidate.

Rush Limbaugh led the cry to impeach Clinton during his own presidency. The impeachment proceedings, which centered around the Monica Lewinsky scandal, were among the most important operations leading to the defeat of Al Gore during his bid for the White House. A defeat that would have otherwise been unlikely given that Gore’s bid road on the coat tails of the longest peacetime economic expansion of American History.

This Wall Street Journal article also credits Clinton’s primary victory in Texas to Rush Limbaugh’s campaign with Bill Clinton.

The group, Republicans for Obama, says “Hillary Clinton owes her political life to Rush Limbaugh”.

DC Superior Court Judge Anne Keary’s ruling jeopardizes constitutional freedoms

February 12, 2008 By: Michelle Grise Category: War

On September 20, 2007, more than 40 activists participated in a nonviolent action at the Capitol “crypt” called “Rivers of Blood”.  The activists were in the gallery of the House and made their way to the Rotunda where they were planning on doing a die-in to illustrate the devastating and senseless loss of life that is occurring as a result of the illegal war that the Bush administration has waged on
Iraq.

The activists were directed away from the Rotunda and into the “crypt”, and educational area in the basement of the Capitol.  After looking at the layout of the crypt, an area out of the way of incoming and outgoing traffic was chosen.  Participants unfurled a banner reading “Rivers of Blood Start Here” and proceeded to take off jackets that had been covering paint splattered tee-shirts to simulate blood and displayed pictures of American soldiers and Iraqi civilians that had been killed in the war.  Each participant spoke the name of the person whose picture they were carrying and explained that that person had died as a result of the Congress’s continued funding of the war.  Then the participants lay on the ground. Pictures of the action can be found at http://www.iraqpledge.org Read the rest of this entry →

How Cell Phone Companies Scam Kids (and Their Parents)

January 23, 2008 By: Don Eaves Category: Youth

Surfpin was established in 2002 with the intention of defining a new industry approach to accepting payments from a demographic that do not have credit cards. - Surfpin, pay-by-phone service corporation

As soon as I got my child a cell phone, I noticed these two itemized charges, under the “Downloads and Premium Content” section:

257 Subscription Surfpin Alerts $9.99
258 Subscription Surfpin Alerts $9.99

I spoke with a rep from the cell company, who indicated that I needed to turn off web access to make these go away. I immediately did. However, recently I noticed the charges were still there.

I called the cell company again, a bit incensed this time. I found that Surfpin had apparently underhandedly signed my child up for some monthly subscription service. Something he had no idea he did.

In fact, according to this CBS News report, it appears that getting a kid to respond to any seemingly innocent query, such as deleting a bad joke, can be used to enroll them in expensive and needless subscription services. Free ring-tones are also used in these subscription scams.

Another company enriching themselves using this scam is Blinko. Blinko claims to have 60 million paying customers and sales of about $262 million a year

The representative at my phone company acknowledged that he hears complaints about these subscriptions all the time, and he felt that these services were nothing but a scam.

Given the obvious security holes associated with this fraud riddled billing scheme, and the fact that the phone companies are obviously aware of them, you’d think the phone company would need to get your explicit permission to bill your phone in this way.

Nope.

In fact phone companies even refuse to provide customers with the option to turn off the ability to charge their phones for these so-called “subscriptions”.

They also refuse to stop fraudulent changes after they are pointed out to them.

To stop these charges the rep told me I had to send the text “STOP” to a number associated with SurfPin, which is the company specializing in this bill-by-phone scheme. Surfpin’s website brags about “accepting payments from a demographic that do not have credit cards”, i.e., children.

That also had no affect.

I ended up changing the phone number for my son’s phone, which he screamed about. We’ll see if that stops the charges.

So given all the features cell phone companies are providing these days, why not one to prevent your cell phone from being used as an open access credit card?

According to the same CBS News report, the Cell Phone companies are getting a piece of the action.

The Meaning and Implications of Official-English and English-Only Initiatives

November 17, 2007 By: Don Eaves Category: Immigration

The Immigration debate has touched off an increase in “English-Only” and “English as the Official Language” initiatives. Recently, the influence of “English-only/Official Language” proponents was highlighted by the Spanish Language Presidential Debate hosted by Univisión. GOP Presidential candidate Tom Tancredo who has centered his campaign on assailing illegal immigration, has said he would never participate in a Spanish-language forum.

Further, there are various Federal legislative initiatives to impose Official English edicts through-out the U.S.

What do “English as Official Language” and “English-Only” mean?

Though some 27 states have defined English as the Official language, the implications of these laws very widely. For example, Massachusetts simply states that no person shall have the right to vote “who shall not be able to read the constitution in the English language, and write his name“, with certain exceptions for age and disabilities. Other state and local edicts limit or bar government’s provision of non-English language assistance and services. For example, some restrict bilingual education programs, prohibit multilingual ballots, or forbid non English government services in general–including such services as courtroom translation or multilingual emergency police lines.

Univisión Spanish Language Debate: GOP’s Two Faced “English Only” Posturing

November 10, 2007 By: Don Eaves Category: Immigration

All GOP Presidential Candidates, other then McCain, are campaigning to make English the Official language. This could mean that all communication between the government and the people it serves would have to be performed exclusively in English. It would also mean that all the U.S. government’s documentation would have to be written exclusively in English, unless specific exemptions were made.

However, the GOP is singing a different tune when it comes to catering for votes from the Hispanic community. All except two candidates have agreed to a Spanish Language debate with Univisión on Dec. 9. The only two candidates who are not confirmed for the Dec. 9 debate are Mike Huckabee and Tom Tancredo. Tancredo has centered his campaign on assailing illegal immigration and has said he would never participate in a Spanish-language forum.

Though many English speakers are unfamiliar with Univisión, its audience surpasses that of cable networks such as CNN and MSNBC.

So will the GOP continue to promote their vision of forcing our government to English only communications in face of the fact that they themselves couldn’t stick to English only communications even during their campaign cycle?

Record Number of Loudoun County Students “Opt-out”/Activists Continue Outreach

November 08, 2007 By: Michelle Grise Category: Loudoun County Public Schools, War

On Wednesday, November 7, LCCRI received information from Ned Waterhouse, deputy superintendent, in response to a request for information for figures on this year’s opt-out requests, which confirmed what we had thought all along.  Contrary to what Wayde B. Byard, spokesman for LCPS, said in a statement to Washington Post, that “This has not been a major concern that parents express,” more than 1800 students returned the opt-out form this year, an increase of more than 3500%.  1858 students returned the form within the time allotted by LCPS.

According to the article in the Washington Post May 28, 2007only 54 students wrote letters at the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year to “opt-out” their personal information from being released to military recruiters.  Prior to this year, a small paragraph on page 23 of the Student Rights and Responsibility Handbook required students and parents to write a letter requesting that the student’s personal information not be released to military recruiters.  Loudoun Force’s campaign, Loudoun County Coalition on Recruitment Issues (LCCRI), found that almost all parents they spoke with had no idea that their child’s personal information was being released without their permission.  Read the rest of this entry →

Loudoun Election Results: Anti-immigration Candidates are Shown the Door

November 07, 2007 By: Don Eaves Category: Immigration

Loudoun has sent a strong signal to candidates who have targeted immigrants in our community to buoy their campaigns.

Election results show that of all the anti-immigrant campaigns, only the heavily developer financed Eugene Delguadio narrowly survived by 224 votes. Even though he out spent Jeanne West by $154,855 to $23,444, with over 60% of his contributions in amounts of over $500.

In the Sheriff’s race, the Republican candidate Greg Ahlemann, who stated that “illegal” immigration is “the Biggest Part of My Campaign” was soundly defeated by both Sheriff Steve Simpson (I), who won, and the Democrat challenger Mike George (D).

In the Supervisor’s race, Chairman Scott York (I) easily kept his seat.

Independent Jim Burton, who spoke out strongly against the tactics and misinformation of the anti-immigration crowd easily kept his seat.

Sheriff Steve Simpson: Identifying and Deporting Illegal Aliens, Details on 287(g) Program, Misinformation

November 02, 2007 By: Don Eaves Category: Interviews, Immigration

The 287(g) program provides us with limited authority to start some of the deportation paperwork. Probably the most important aspect of 287(g) is direct database access to determine who is and isn’t an illegal alien. That is all it is: it does not give us authority to knock on doors and ask for documentation. - Sheriff Steve Simpson

This is the second part of our interview with Sheriff Steve Simpson. He provides details on the procedures used to identify illegal alien’s, how the department works with ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement), the reality of the highly politicized 287(g) program and its pros and cons, and finally he describes what he sees as misinformation and hype surrounding the immigration debate.

Loudoun Force: Once someone is arrested for a crime, what is the procedure for identifying illegal alien status?

Sheriff Steve Simpson: Sometimes, individuals will tell you by their own volition that they are here illegally when asked for their license and registration. Read the rest of this entry →
